Kanina Castle – History Above the Bay of Vlorë
Just a few kilometers from Vlorë, high above the Bay of Vlorë, stands Kanina Castle, one of southern Albania’s most important historical and cultural landmarks. Its strategic position on a hill has given the site exceptional importance throughout the centuries, while today it offers visitors some of the most spectacular views of Vlorë, the bay and the surrounding coastline.
The origins of the fortification reach back to antiquity. Over the centuries, Kanina developed through different periods of construction and fortification, including the Byzantine and Ottoman eras. The site evolved from an important fortified settlement into a significant military and administrative center, reflecting the changing history of the region.
Kanina is also closely connected with Albania’s medieval history and the Principality of Arbër. According to Albania’s official tourism authority, the castle is traditionally associated with the 1451 coronation of Gjergj Kastrioti Skënderbeu as Prince of Arbëria, adding a particularly important chapter to its historical significance.
Walking through the remains of the castle, visitors can discover sections of its defensive walls, towers and archaeological remains while imagining the strategic role the fortress once played in protecting and controlling the surrounding territory.
Beyond its historical importance, Kanina Castle is worth visiting for its remarkable setting. From the hilltop, the landscape opens toward the Bay of Vlorë, the city, the Adriatic coastline and the mountains beyond. The combination of ancient stone walls, dramatic landscapes and centuries of history makes Kanina an ideal stop for travelers who want to experience more than just the beaches of Vlorë.
A visit to Kanina Castle can easily be combined with exploring the traditional village of Kaninë and the surrounding hills, making it a rewarding cultural experience just outside the city.
Kanina Castle is where history, heritage and panoramic views come together — a place to step away from the coast for a moment and discover the story of Vlorë from above.
